Question Avon ZV5 tyres

My car had its MOT and service yesterday. I had Avon ZV5 tyres fitted about 4000 miles ago and the Volvo garage in Ayr said that the front tyres were getting close to needing new ones. The fronts were 353 both sides and the backs were 565. Surely tyres should last longer than this? The tyres are
Avon ZV5 tyres 205/50 R17 93W.

Any ideas would be very welcome

Brian

Hi
thats oddly low for tyres - the lowest ever I did on set of tyres was 14k miles and its with very soft Dunlops worn to less than 1mm. DId you have tyres from new? not sure what your "353" mean but afaik anything less than 2mm qualifies as "replecement urgently needed".

Are those evenly worn? not like outside is bald and inside is deep thread?

I think that the numbers mean that the 353 are 3 for the outside of the tyre and 5 for the middle. The tyres were bought new. They don't look particularly worn but if they say they are then they must be? I will buy one of those cheap gauges to keep an eye on them. They cost me about £82 fitted which to me isn't a cheap tyre.

Not sure if they are trying to rip you off or they refer to uneven wear. Did you say you passed MOT with advisory or what? Not sure the rules in UK but is MOT there done by Volvo garage that also sells tyres?

never used Avon tyres so cant coment on the quality, but 85GBP seem a bit on high side...

Avon tyres are more a performance tyre meaning a soft compound hence a wear rate quicker than others but more grip. I've worn rear tires in 3k, I know friends that have not even seen 3k. All depends on compound and ones right foot. Also a heavy car will wear tyres quicker..

The MOT didn't even mention tyre wear, the garage did. I would never buy tyres from a main dealer anyway. As a matter of interest, what is a good all round tyre that doesn't cost the earth. I don't do a lot of mileage and very rarely go anywhere near 70 MPH. I live in a small village in Ayrshire.

Thanks for your comments

It may be hard to recommend something in general as everyone has their preferences, I am now on set of Fuldas Sportmax2 and those are much nicer than my previous Hankooks. After 9k miles now gonna rotate them X-way as front is bit more worn but will get probably 5-6k more max from them so those are wearing more than Hankooks (20k miles). But grip is far better. Had Goodyears Efficientgrip Performance and those lasted long aswell and was very good tyre, worth checking out. I usually source tyres myself online (oponeo) so I am looking for deals or good prices for premium tyres and get best that is on offer so Im not attached to brand.

The 353 & 565 refer to tread depth measurements in mm across the tyre in 3 places. Even at 3mm you're nowhere near the lower legal limit, so they may have been trying it on, happened to me a few times.

The readings do suggest your tyres may be under inflated though due to more wear on the outsides. The opposite happens with over inflation, you'd have a reading like 535 & 656 then, i.e. worn in the middle.

Check your pressures and carry on as normal I say, until you're down to the limit of 1.6mm. Furthermore, that limit only applies to the central 3/4 of the width of the tyre.

Thanks for your replies. I tend to inflate to the lower limit so so will up it to max load pressures.

I put Avon ZV7's on my V50 and they are wearing well. [Fronts only]. I had the ZV5's on my previous car [Astra] and they lasted for ages which is why I've kept with them.

Done about 15k so far and they still have plenty of life left yet. Should last until after the winter months.

As previously mentioned, those tyre tread readings show signs of under-inflated tyres.

There should be a sticker on the off side door sills with ideal tyre pressures.

https://www.blackcircles.com/ - is a good place for tyres delivered to your door or a nearby garage.
