It's automatic. The switch is inside the lock. If the switch doesn't work, then no light.
The lock itself could still work. There are several switches inside the lock. This particular switch is used by the dome light and the electric closing function, if available.

I have what appears to be a CEM issue stopping the interior lights (but not the load area one) from working on mine. May be worth plugging in to VIDA to see if it has logged anything.

I had exactly the same issue with my cargo bay light. Also, the glove box light was feeble.
Also the power tailgate would only operate intermittently.
Had checked out under warranty and the explanation was a wire fault causing the system to go into battery saving mode.

All working fine now.

It's the same switch in the tailgate lock that controls the rear dome light and enables the tailgate closing switch.

Default Cargo Light & Tailgate open Warning

2005 XC 70:
Have gate open message displayed all the time. Have wired switch closed, removed switch and jumper, bench tested switch - tested good. No matter what I have tried message stays displayed. Now the cargo light won't light, checks good on bench. Dome lights are lit. No power to the plug that go to light.
Are the two issues related?
Is it one of the electronic modules?
If so which module would it be?
Where are the modules located?
Found a discussion where someone stated the front module is located in a mirror, is that correct? If so which mirror?
