Default Do late 400's have SIPS or just an airbag?

Hi all. I usually reside on the 700/900 forum although I've owned 400's in the past.

We're considering a 2nd car to run with the 740 estate we own.

Can anyone confirm what, if any, safety upgrades were fitted to the later 400 series.

AFAIK all 400's had front and rear door bars and later there was an option for the SRS steering-wheel airbag.

I believe that since the full sips enhancement first installed in the 850's involved a change to the body itself it was only offered to the later 900's and not to the 400's.

Is this so or did the late 400s come with this safety upgrade?

Thanks for any replies.

Regards

Hello!
There's no SIPS. Just the bars and some absorbing materials, but it's a strong car, just like any other Volvo.
Some time ago, my employers father (70 years old) made a mistake while driving and he was hit by a fast truck right in the drivers door. Spent some time in the hospital but he was ok. The car was scrap.
You can check other details in this brochure: 440_460_1995_UK.pdf
Good luck!

no SIPS as such apart from the door beams which every volvo has had since 1972 .. The 400 has steel tubes in the chassis under the boot floor which help rear end impacts ..
You would find it worth trying a S40 or V40 these can be picked up very cheap now and are a much more solid rust free car ...

Fair point about the S40/V40 and one I hadn't looked at.

I'll take a wander around autotrader / ebay / friday ads and see what's there as well.

thanks

My 440 ( Feb. 94 ) has a badge on the inner trim of both front doors with 'SIPS' on it, along with a little graphic of a car getting t-boned

thats plastic and cardboard padding in the door panel rather than structural ridgidity though ... early days of SIPS .. It all helps though ...
