1991 240 SE Brake wear
Hello all, I've recently started hearing some grinding from the rear during braking and had a look at my disks today.
The drivers side one is no longer shiny all over and is pitted and grey around the edge about a centimeter in. I'm assuming that this means that the pads have worn it out and I'll need new disks and possibly pads, is this a sensible assumption ? I'm thinking of getting 2 of these V60310 BRAKE DISC-REAR 281mm 240 Series 74-93 17.00 Add And some of these V64140 BRAKE PAD SET-RE TEX O.E 240 Series DL 78>88 TEXTAR 13.75 Add I know very little about this, does anyone know how many pads I need for the rear ? Regards Ben |

You will need one axle set, which is four pads in total. If your disc is no longer shiny, you may well have a seized caliper on that side. These can be freed off, but I would recommend that you budget for a new one, just in case.

Hi you will get one axle set per box of brake pads meaning 4. If you go for re-surfaced pads you may be able to get them in pairs but most likely still get 4.
It may not be your pads at fault if the disc's aren't shiney it may be the thickness of the disc get a caliper and measure the thickness of the disc Solid New disc :0.56 inch Wear limit :0.50 Ventilated ATE :0.94 Girling :0.80 Wear Limit ATE :0.90 Girling :0.80 All these are imperial measurements and not metric. Don't forget that if you're changing a rear disc, that includes the handbrake drum too, so if the car's mileage is high, might be worth investing in an axle set of handbrake shoes as well?
Just a thought.

At that year changing the shoes is a must as these are bonded shoes and often start to separate from the metal backing. Not expensive. I did mine on a 93 and one shoe had parted company and one on the other side was 3/4 detached. Go for it. Regards Peter

You may well find the hold down kit needs replacing as well.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I had the hold down kit replaced plus new pads and had the disks polished and all is well. It seems that the bits that hold the pads in place had deteriorated and the pad was sort of floating and being held in place by the surrounding parts.
Just took it for a spin round Coventrys picturesque ring road and all is well. Regards Ben |
