steering tie rod query
Hi,
I've just found out that I'll have to replace the Steering Tie rod on the drivers side on my 1992 Volvo 245 2.0 . Upon enquiring about the part there appears to be 2 types listed with the local motor factors. One is for the ZF and the other is for the Cangear systems how do I tell what ones I have so that I can get the correct parts? thanks is advance brendan

From what I can see in the Haynes manual, the cam gear and ZF steering are both the old type of non-power racks. I assume that your car has power steering, if so, check again with your motor factors.

There were two different types of power rack as well. The changeover was in the early eighties. I generally find with racks that when they have reached this stage it makes sense to fit a recon rack unless finances dictate otherwise. You the know that you should be good for another 100+k of trouble free motoring as regards the rack.

Camgear racks have the steering gaiters thin end fit directly onto the tie rod. ZF racks have the steering gaiters fit onto a disc on the tie rod. All my 240s have had Camgear racks. The year is important, at some point (87?) they changed from a female thread on the tie rod to a male thread. There may be other differences as well.
I would fit a new gaiter at the same time as it is a lot cheaper than getting an alignment done and you are doing all the work anyway. HTH, Andrew |
