Electrics: Coolant temp gauge and red triangle

Hi

I drive a 2000 S80 2.4 petrol auto. I usually keep the car garaged, but went on holiday and parked it outside a mates house for 12 days (I say this just in case moisture in the electrics is a possible cause).

Anyway, after about 5 miles on the way back home after my holiday, I noticed the temp gauge went down to stone cold for a few seconds from its normal warm position, then flickered toward the middle of the gauge and back to stone cold and then went up to boiling hot, with the red triangle coming on, the orange engine symbol coming on and a message to stop. The car was driving just fine bye the way.

I knew the car wasn't overheating, but confirmed by pulling over and feeling the coolant hoses (all normal). The car idled just fine on the hard shoulder (red triangle on, warning message advising to stop, orange engine symbol on and temp gauge in the red) but I did notice that when I blipped the throttle, it was hesitant even though it hadn't been before.

I switched the engine off and then on again, the gauge shot up to max with all the associated drama of the lights and symbols, but I decided to carry on (I had a 200 mile journey to do!).

After a few seconds of driving the needle settled back to its usual position, the red triangle went out and so did the message. The check engine orange symbol remained on and has done so since (I drove the car this morning- no issues whatsoever).

Can anyone suggest/diagnose? I don't have the diagnostic tool so cant read messages, but if you live in or near Beeston Nottingham and can help me read these, I'd be grateful!

Was your coolant level OK?

I suspect your coolant temperature sensor has failed. This is an easy "unplug, unscrew" fix. Many would recommend replacing your thermostat too. Use Volvo parts.

Even though genuine Volvo coolant lasts a good long time I'd make certain of its condition.

Any record of coolant refreshment?
