Default Car park frustration

We can park in the local pay and display carpark for up to an hour free of charge, but a valid ticket has to be displayed - you just press the green button and out pops a ticket.

But today, both ticket machines were out of order, but hey-ho, you can 'pay' by phone, via 'Ringo'.

So I rang the number, and as I'd used Ringo before, it asked if I wanted to park car reg *888***, a White Lexus. Well it was the correct reg number, but now it's on a red Volvo.

Press 1 to change or add a vehicle, etc.

All very well, but the system couldn't recognise the same number on a different car, so I couldn't do it that way....

I only wanted to park for a few minutes, i suppose I could've put a note in the screen of my arrival time, but having none of the 3 separate ways to pay available, I came home.

Cool Parking with the machine!!!!

Well Baxlin, You cannot beat "The Machine"!!! It can drive you bonkers at times, Not being able to talk to another human, and explain what is going on.But on the other hand you would probably get a 'jobsworth' who would proceed to inform you that it was 'the computer' and he could not possibly over rule, said computer! Next time, you could use your tow rope, and take the ticket machine for recycling..... and throw yourself on the mercy of the court. I realize it's illegal, but, think of the feelgood factor!

Regards,Keith.

In the past I've left a note in the windscreen & taken photos of the non-functioning meters just in case they fix them & decide to slap a ticket on the car.

Good idea. The legal term is 'frustration of contract'.

I agree, but as there is the option to pay by phone, any note could just be ignored, and a ticket still issued.

On the other hand, I could have accepted their insistence that it was a white Lexus, and left a note saying "this isn't a bright red Volvo, it is a white Lexus...."

They cannot not reasonably expect everybody to have a mobile phone. I would be surprised if they issued a Fine/Charge that it would stand up in court.

One of the 'First world problems' of having vanity plates on your car.

Having a registration plate is proof you paid the registration fee/tax on a new vehicle. Why people voluntarily want to pay more tax to the DVLA (by buying vanity plates) is beyond me. Probably the same people who pay accountants to save them tax elsewhere in their lives!

Thanks for all the comments, particularly about the personal plate. We all have a choice over what we spend our money on, for instance I don’t drink or smoke, so don’t pay taxes on those, for others it’s a lifestyle choice.

Back on thread, I’ve now clarified things with the powers that be, and if none of the machines is working, they cannot enforce the pay and display rules. I was advised to photograph the machines showing they were out of order, with date and time, for if they were repaired while I was parked.

I hope this information will be of help to someone, as well as for me!
