Just wondering, could the standard steel 15" wheels from my 144 fit onto the PV?

Yes with 114.3 to 108 conversion spacers or major work replacing the axle and stub axles

Would that put extra stress on the wheel studs or affect the handling ? I was thinking that I could perhaps swap my 144 wheels over during the next 500 miles rally to save my white walls and give better grip if it gets wet. Less expensive than an extra set of wheels and tires.

Unless you have changed the wheel pcd on the earlier car the two models are different.
400 series, Amazon and 1800( up to 1970) used a 5x114.3 pcd whilst the later cars including the 140 series used 5x108 pcd.
Not sure but the back space and offset may also have changed.
I have hubcentric wheel spacers (25mm) fitted for around 10years. Done about 30k miles on them and i haven't had any issues to date.

Hi

Be careful with spacers in Portugal in the MOT they will not pass the car, and if the wheels stick from the fenders the police can make an issue with that.

I do have a set of cosmics gatering dust in the garage. Fitted with Pirellis they have had hardly any use since fitting the tyres.
Pics of them can be found in my gallery.
