Some early cars, all makes, used a circuit that switched out the ballast resistor when the starter was being used to give a fatter spark. It would then switch back to 3 ohm for normal running. Check that this car has this sort of system. That doesn't address your 456 problem. Bentley 6 cylinder firing order is probably 1-5-3-6-2-4. Check that.
Hello Derek, if he means cylinder 4-5-6 he has a hughe problem with the engine. Not coil ore distributor relatet.
One Distributor
two points
One coil!
1 4 6 2 3 5 firing order
1-6-3 one contact
4-2-5 the other one

Hi. What caused the internal short? I once had a similar problem with a carburettor 164. It had a set of points fitted that were either the wrong ones or faulty. The moving arm of the points was sometimes catching the inside of the distributor body. Problem solved by a new set of points. Later injection cars have a larger diameter distributor so the problem can't arise.

Spoke to the guy again today and he forgot to mention that the HT was arcing down the side of the cap clip down to the dizy base. Sounds like the situation that "volvorama" mentioned earlier with the points touching the inside of the dizy body. Told him to check it out.
