Default Second generation S40 real world....

Soooooo it`s been a long while since I`ve posted on here. Just over 5 years to be precise

Think I may be returning to the Volvo fold

Started off with a 1.7l 440 but then upgraded to a 2.0l 740 GLE which I absolutely loved and wished I never got rid of but at the time the 25 mpg was killing me.

Fast forward a few years I then got a superb condition 1st gen 1.8l S40 which was a great car. Bought it off here actually but again it was quite thirsty. It was written off by a stupid woman smashing into me whilst stationery at a T junction after nearly 3 years of ownership. I got a decent payout and have had a Peugeot 206 SW for the last 5 years - but that`s a different kettle of fish ! Competent, practical, quite economical but slow and a bit bland.

Thinking of getting a very tidy 2nd gen 2.0l petrol S40. it`s a 2007 model and seems to have been looked after. Less than 70,000 miles on the clock and FSH.

I`ve read conflicting info on the web.

Is it a Duratec HE 2.0 liter engine that was designed by Mazda that`s in it ? If so then it has a timing chain rather than a belt ?

I do a 40 mile round trip every day with most of it being on the motorway. What sort of MPG can I expect ?

anything to look out for other than the usual wear and tear on a 11 year old vehicle ?

your experiences/advice will be greatly appreciated

thanks

2.0l diesel is a PSA engine and has a belt not chain. I average around 45-46 mpg in mine without really trying.

  1. Yes, it's the MZR engine, and yes it's a chain not a belt!
  2. If most is on the motorway I think you could expect 40MPG if you drive it sensibly.
  3. Look out for unevenly worn tyres I guess, the original tyres on my car had bulges etc.. Since I got my new tyres I got a full laser alignment and they seem fine now! That's the only thing I can really think of.

My 2.0l is going strong on 135K miles, no issues to report! Love it

Very reliable engine. Easy to service as well.

Should get around 30mpg.
