Default What's the correct data?

After a lot of looking on google, amazon and e-bay I've come to the conclusion that the GDI version of the V40 is a bit of a lost soul.
E.g. recommended thermostat opening temperature this seems to vary between 80 and 92 Celsius so after reading up on several mitsubishi forums and checking out the spares online it seems the gdi engine in the mitsubishi range has only one option and that's 82 Celsius, so one's winging its way to me.
Spark plugs once again only one option and they have a price to make one wince; the previous owner seems to have coppered her bets, there were three different sorts of plugs in the car and one of those was cracked and all were sooty as an old coal burning chimney. FWIW, the plugs needed a trip to halfords as none of the plug spanners I have could reach down to the item, another £15 up the Khyber.
Given that the engine has different technology to almost every other contemporary car I think it pays to go with the manufacturer's default, especially the engine temperature given it has an alloy block that can be susceptible to overheating damage.
Anyone have any views on this issue?

I had the GDI for a few years and IMO the best of the range apart from the `98 T4 1855 engine.

As it is different you should go to Mitsubishi for engine parts as Volvo Dealers have no idea.

Stick to the original plugs which you can get from Volvo but the expense will be returned in MPG.

Also very important in this cold weather the GDI is the only version which is supplied with a special cover than fits in the front scuttle under the bumper to stop the cold air getting in and preventing the engine getting to proper working temp. for also correct mpg.

If you don`t have this fitted in winter together with the low thermostat setting of 82 degrees the engine will not get hot enough for good performance and it will also wear quicker.

If you are lucky the cover should be in a vinyl bag in the boot area.

Number 27 is the part.

No such luck, I'm afraid. I'll talk it over with my son and fit a hotter thermostat for winter and the correct one for summer, such as it is.
Really appreciate the info, whereabouts did you source the thumbnails? I'm very much in the dark regarding much of the detail.

My mate had a GDI. Never serviced it (the sump leaked so he called topping up the oil a service), never looked after it but he did run it on V Power and did 60 miles a day in it.

The thing is, it ran well, didn't smoke and went really well.

He bought it on 80k and sold it on 130k, its still going now.

A lot of people don`t like the GDI all i can say is say that after you have owned one!
They are a brilliant economic cheap motor with better performance than the ordinary 1.8 Volvo engine.

The secret may be that it revs to 6800rpm quite a bit more than the Volvo unit and so it does give it`s power away generously and smoothly.

The engine vent cover seems to be a phase 1 thing not a match on the fitting for a Phase 2 apparently.
I don't see how but there you go.
Love my GDI 201000 now.

Thanks for that. I took it for a run from dover to the a2/m2 roundabout and back to cook the cat for its MOT and averaged 37.1 mpg according to the computer and this at about 80 - 85 well pleased.
trouble is I'm used to my TT and the volvo seems gutless after it. Smoother and quieter but gutless.
