Hi on the D5 you will not need one , as the side of the belt is only a single pulley, just set up all of the marks,

This is the question because my belt is good and its from Volvo but i guess it has a non Volvo tensioner and pulley. So i could just replace those by Volvo ones.

Many Thanks
If you go in just replace the lot - even thinking of leaving a belt in for the sake of £20 is mad.

Volvo don't make timing belts, Gates make them for Volvo - so get a Gates one for £17 and you have a "Volvo" one with Gates stamped on it.

I have been to the factory where they make these! Very interesting - I even saw the "Volvo" ones!

Is that up near Leeds somewhere? I went to see Gates 20 plus years ago to source a restraining belt for engine mounts when I used to design mounts for Audi. (Fitting a belt to the mount provides an upward ’snubber’ and saved about £80 per car. I didn’t see too much of that sadly....)

Dumfries. I was there on non-related business but got round the full site on several occasions. I don't think gates have any other UK site now - I would have known about it doing what I was doing.

The lab was fantastic. If you imagine a lab with about 100 timing chests of different vehicles running with a perspex front cover so they can view them - all running at quite high RPM - they then had various lines that could spray oil or sand or some other containment into the cases while running. They just left them running constantly.

I have some photos from the factory on another computer which I will try and get uploaded. Each belt starts off as about a single vulcanised rubber/polymer compound which is made over a mould - so they are between 300mm and 1200mm wide before they go into the gang cutter. I paid extra attention to the Volvo racking in the warehouse where the Volvo belts were.
