Default master cylinder upgrade?

Is there any difference between 960 and 940 master cylinders? Would I be able to upgrade my master cylinder using a 960 unit?
any help appreciated

Ebay is not the most reliable source for car part information, but for the ATE master cylinder at least the same part no is given for 960 and 940 (abs) - 03.2023-0875.3

Why would you want to upgrade your master cylinder? Are you looking for a more responsive/sharper brake pedal or just feel the car is "under-braked" all round?

i
I ordered the calipers and brackets from retroturbo.com...
I am just doing the front conversion with XC90 336mm discs
for the rear I am using grooved discs and yellow stuff pads all round...
It is a better conversion than using S60R calipers...
With any luck it SHOULD give the stopping power I am after...
I ordered the calipers already refurbed and painted to look like S60R calipers...you may get them cheaper from an Alfa specialist breakers..

Ah, i see Damon! I guess if you drive it a bit "enthusiastically" you'll need to uprate the brakes, sensible option!

I'm at the other end of the scale, barely use my brakes at all! For example, 10 years ago i bought my Rover 827 Sterling and inspected the pads. Fronts were ok but the rears needed renewal with the discs. Bought new front pads as well and i'm still waiting to fit them!

I do keep an eye on the condition (if they start crumbling with age they'll be done) but in terms of wear, barely anything over the past 20k miles.

In fairness i use the brakes a lot more in my 760 but even that is showing no real signs of wear after 7k miles in the past 18 months (front pads and discs & rear pads renewed just after i got it) so it always amuses me when people kill their brakes very quickly.

A friend took his MX-5 on a track day yesterday and killed his front pads and tyres within a few laps. He had planned ahead and had spares pads and tyres for the return journey though.

Definitely a wise move upgrading brakes if you drive it hard!

What year is the car?

I vaguely recall they played with the MC size and pedal lever ratio towards the end of the life of the 940 to make it match the late 960 and v/s90.

Could be wrong but i'm sure i have read people have swapped in the assembly from a late 940 to improve the pedal feel and make the brakes feel a bit more modern.

Might be worth looking for changes by model year for any mention of the brakes.

Or perhapse someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of these wagons could chime in.
