I love reading anything written by Skyship and oil........
So I’m safe to keep the 5w30 A5/B5? As people says the C3 grade has shown more signs of wear?

Oil can be a minefield, if you let it be.

I use A5/B5 5w 30 Shell Helix Ultra AF. Change my oil and filter every 6k or 6months using an OE (Mann) filter.

Volvo state use A5/B5 0w 30 Castrol Edge Oils.

The reason I use A5/B5 is because Volvo tell me to.

The reason I use 5W 30 is because I have an engine with a few miles on (130k) and I listen to those who say the thickness between 0w and 5w is negligible/hardly noticeable. Skyship007 is an Oil Specialist. I have read and read his posts. He makes more than enough sense to me. His posts are detailed, based on logic and what appears to be very detailed technical knowledge. Thats my choice to heed or ignore. I listen to lots of very knowledgable people of this forum. I have favourites and they have helped me no end. CheshireD5 who's advice on what parts equivalent- trouble shooting - ways around things , amazing knowledge, SwissXC90 - who saved me a fortune, and my Cornwall holiday, with his electronic knowledge when I had a serious salt water key issue that had my key like new within 24hrs, Clan, the stern wise one who's all encompassing knowledge is the rule book and letter of the law, and many many others who all have incredible logic and experience, who don't get thanked enough.

So,

Ive had no issues using Shell Helix 5w 30 oil A5 B5. Skyship states it one of the better ones on the market. I tow a caravan, in the UK and abroad. Holland, France, Belgium. Ive had no issues with it.

I also a few times a month have a good run in my car. The DPF gets a good blow out on a motorway, which is FAR better for the DPF than the stop start motoring round the small roads than any low ash oil could be.

IF I was only doing city driving in my D5 engine, I would possibly use a lower ash oil, just for my own minds sake. The thought process being, lower ash, less in the DPF therefore longer before the DPF needs a good thrashing down the motorway. But at the end of the day, the DPF still needs a good blow out down the motorway at least once a month (driving style and conditions dependant.

I change my oil every 6k miles. I use Liquid Moly engine flush just before an oil change to lift soot, dirt etc etc from the engine. And I also add some Amtech Restore Oil in, just to keep metals topped up. Thats my choice. It works well for me.

In the summer, I'm driving to the South of France, towing a caravan, and will have a car loaded with bikes food and all kinds of holiday stuff. Its going to be hot and hard on the engine so, Im going to use 5w 40 Shell Helix Ultra. Why ? Engine protection and because Skyship, the closest ill get to listen to an oil specialist says this:

Volvo list Edge 0w30 for most of their diesels for fuel economy reasons. Once the engine has fully run in (100K plus), it's better to use an 0 or 5w40. Shell Helix is often the cheapest full synthetic and check to see if you can use an A3/B4 post warranty, as it is a slightly better spec than A5/B5 and often cheaper.

And if I feel its ok. I may use that from now on, or drop back to 5w 30 in winter.

Depending on how you drive (city or motorway), the choice is yours.

IF the oil is A5/B5 compliant, as Volvo want, I think thats generally accepted as correct for your car.

Whether you choose 5w or 0w is your choice. We live in the UK where we do not suffer Baltic cold continually, so I choose 5w, and have no issues.

Many purists will say A5/B5 0w 30 is ONLY to be used. I respect that.

Low ash or not ?

It hasn't harmed my car NOT specifically using it, for the reasons detailed above.

Thanks
A quick Google brought this up. But ensure you get correct grade too.
