Default 123 ignition

Hello everyone,
I'm after a 123 ignition set up but trying to save a few pounds. Does anyone know the cheapest place to get it from?
Many thanks
Joe

Don`t think there is much in it. I looked at a few places but ended up buying from Amazon cars. At least if there are any problems you have a reputable place to go back to. Also worth talking to them before you place the order.

The easiest way to save a few pounds is to stick with your Bosch distributor........

Had my 123 distributer and coil fitted yesterday at Amazon cars, can feel that the timing is much better, pulling from lower in the Rev range and running smoothly. A nice upgrade.

Just my opinion but the only 123 worth bothering with is the programmable version. Unless your dizzy is badly worn just a simple electronic conversion of your existing unit is the best bet.

The Amazon cars one has been tuned specifically. I wondered how much diffence it would make, maybe a little more pronounced on mine as it was an old type distributer but I am very pleased with the result.
A fully electronic ignition is always is always going to be more efficient and more consistent than an old mechanical one.

The only argument against I would say, is maybe it would be too smooth for some who want to keep more of the old timer rough around the edges drive.

What?!?! Absolutely impossible! There is no way an electric ignition is better than the original. Amazoncars have chosen the best curve, not programmed it to the engine!

If you're making a comparison of a brand new out of the box 123 with a poorly set up original, yes, there will be a considerable difference. Like-for-like against a new distributor, there is no difference as the curves are copies of the factory curves.

The only benefit I see of a 123 is it's an off the shelf distributor that can be fitted to any engine because of the easy selection of different curves. So if for example you upgrade your B18a to B18d spec, you can just whack a 123 straight in on the B18b setting.

I would bet that the so called Amazoncars special setting is that of the original B18b distributor as that was the best original Bosch distributor for these cars with twin carbs. A single carb set up is best on the B20a setting.

Please don't be talked into the blurb of these expensive things as they really are no different to a properly set up original. If you're concerned about the high maintenance of keeping a set of points properly adjusted, there are many drop in electronic ignition devices such as Accuspark which are equally as good as a properly adjusted set of points. That is until it goes wrong and you're stranded reach for that old set of points you had in your door pocket....
