Bolting on the wings and sealing....
Hi all,
I just wondered if anyone else silently suffers when fitting the new wings on their Amazon. I'm fortunate to have purchased a car with the New and original wings from Volvo as part of the deal (the car has been off the road 30 years), now then the fixing kits (spire bolts) are a bit fiddly compared to what I remember from many years ago when I last fitted a wing. Does anyone else have this problem or is it me? Also I've never used any type of mastic with initial fitting of the panel only painting with Waxoyl on both mating surfaces, this practice has always worked as any water just runs off the panel and does not stay trapped but some folk seem to run a silicone bead down the inner wing which I guess would stablise the panel although most later Volvo wings are always fitted dry on manufature. And yes I know the spire type clips sport gaps but I drill a drain hole in the inner wing which the box section benefits from with rust treatment. Also the back rubber seal seems to be rather loose and waves around and yes I do have it the correct way round as I have an original with underseal on the one side.....................sorry for the long saga thanks for anyone with any ideas |

Methods vary but I would use mastic sealing tape wide enough to cover the top of the box section. It's job is to keep water out of the box section at the fixing holes. It is a gutter after all down each side. Mastic should overlap into the underside of the wheel arch and you can add some underseal along the join too. See eBay or any caravan supply store for mastic tape, perhaps 38 or 45mm wide. Too wide will trim off easily. Dinitrol is better than waxoyl and there are others. Get as much as you can into the box with a fan nozzle on the gun if possible. Do this after painting is complete. Wings will need to be shuffled around a little to get good gap lines and this can be done before final tightening.

Fantastic plastic
Without wing liners they'll always rust I reckon. A very effective and inexpensive option is to get some 240 wing liners. They're a good fit and you'll be able to avoid drilling holes anywhere if you make up some appropriate brackets. Fixes to bumper mountings and mudflap mounting and clips itself around the wheelarch without paint damage.
