Default Spare wheel well size.

I have not had my 2014 V70 D2 Powershift delivered yet and I was wondering if the spare wheel well can hold a skinny 17 inch spare? I am reading of too many people stranded with a shredded tyre and a useless patch kit.

Unless Volvo have changed the floor moulding it should hold a space saver wheel. From memory I think my 2008 Se lux had a full size steel wheel.

My 2012 my V70 D3's wheel well held a skinny 17" spare. I had to be creative with a Stanley knife on the foam insert so that it could hold the jack etc.

When it went in for it's next service the dealer replaced the insert with the correct one FOC (and without comment). I only found out later.

I'm going to get one for my 2011 v70 this year before going France. About £62 roughly for a new space saver from Volvo. Genuine Volvo scissor jack is about £53 (for mine anyway) so I'm going to get my own jack.

Bear in mind its not so much the size of the wheel that could prevent it from fitting, but the size (specifically the circumference) of the tyre that is important.

I will measure the width of the well to make sure a spare will fit in there.

Got a genuine volvo one for my MY16 from FRF volvo back in October. I collected it but it was less than 60 quid.
I bought my car at two years old - it came with tyre repair system but all the foam inserts were pre cut for tyre tools and jack. The 'latex' bottle presses into the side of the spacesaver tyre though so I removed it from the car. Compressor still lives happily in the foam block beneath the spacesaver - handy for slow punctures or kids inflatables

Can anyone tell me if any Volvo 5 stud 17" skinny spare will do or is it specific to the MY?

As long as it is a vehicle from this forum (s80,v70,xc70) or the next one in the list (s60,v60,xc60) then it should be fine. Earlier v70's etc will fit but will need an adaptor ring for the hub to keep it centered.

Spare tyre size for your car should be t125/80r17 (to fit in the well). Not only is the skinny tyre much narrower it is also much smaller overall diameter than my xc70 tyre and smaller again than the xc60 tyre that also uses it.
If you didn't need it to fit into the well you could also use a LR Evoque skinny tyre - it uses an 18" wheel and is nearer to standard diameters.
