Default Lighting bar on bike hitch rack

Is a light board needed on a bike hitch rack when attached to the XC90?
I would like to know before I start shopping for a rack.

If you obscure the lights and index plate with the bikes yes.

Yes, but that's what I don't (can't) know since I don't have a rack (yet).

Lighting comes built in with the Volvo racks: http://accessories.volvocars.com/en-.../all/all/L.H.D

There's also a version for 3 or 4 bikes: http://accessories.volvocars.com/en-.../all/all/L.H.D

They look nice, Thule perhaps? The price is a little bit less nice...
Since the rack will be used only occasionally, I hope to spend less. Some models have the light board as an option.

The bikes will almost certainly block the reg plate so you would need an extra reg plate which needs to be illuminated at night. Easiest solution therefore is a lighting board!

This is the Thule towbar mounted bike carrier that I have used for over 5 years with two heavy eMTB’s - I purchased from roofracks.co.uk
https://www.roofracks.co.uk/thule-euroclassic-928/
I cannot fault it in any way whatsoever, in particular the way you can press a bar underneath the carrier with your foot & rotate the whole carrier (& bikes) towards you to allow access to open the rear of the car makes this model so ideal.
The cost may be slightly more than the more basic cloned models, but does it have the well designed features and more importantly will it last the course.........suspect answers will be No.
You could always check eBay as I have seen the same model for sale there in the past.

I have a very similar 929 and it is fantastic. Thule stuff is great.

The rear hatch is simply not designed to hang bikes off. I have a real issue with these racks which hang off the boot and wouldn't touch one with a bargepole to be honest. I helped a colleague to fit one. My parting words were "dont come crying to me when it falls off.....". He never used it so I can't claim to have been proved right yet.....

So decent options are roof (which will cost you about 300 quid for bars and carriers for 2 bikes) or towbar which will cost you about 400 quid plus the tow bar. If you havent got a towbar then this becomes an expensive way of doing things.
