"fully loaded" and "roof box" , are bad words for economy .. so is 60 + mph , I bet you were doing a lot more than that :-). What was your average speed by the way ? it needs to be in a band 38 - 50 mph . yes i have seen 3 driv e volvos now showing mid 70's mpg on their average consumption , it is ironic that they have all been V50's though , It CAN be done but the only way in my experience is to sit at 55 mph on the motorway hoping there are not too many hills . I find it very easy to get 50 mpg even in town , a lot harder to get 60 mpg and as above VERY hard to get near 70 mpg .. but it is possible . I recently did 4 x identical 100 mile trips from the south to the midlands in the D2 version with 6 speed , my average speed was 42 mph , i did not touch a motorway and i got 63 mpg driving for economy , after the second journey i had reached a plateu and could not get it higher but it was maintained for the other two trips . There was traffic on 3 or 4 occasions too . set your display to instantaneous mpg and you will soon see where you are going wrong , with the D2 version the vast majority of the time it was showing 85 - 99 mpg , hills are a killer and so are the first few miles from cold start and pulling away from traffic lights . NEVER use boost or overtake anyone ! Remember the official government figures are nothing to do with volvo , they are just there to compare one car to another not imply that any car will actualy do that on the road .
