I didnt take the XC90 because I thought it would be better in the snow. I took it because:-

A. I prefer driving it
B. It is fully expensed
C. I thought that the roads would be clear dry tarmac (and apart from some patches on a short 2 mile access road to Fairholmes I was right).

If it had been different conditions I would probably have taken the V60...

Having fitted 19" wheels with Dunlop winter tyres I managed to, up, down and from the alps in snow and slush with no need to resort to chains. (£1400 all up from local dealer).

Subjectively they are more comfortable than the insane 22" wheels although they don't look as good. Straight up our local steep hill in the snow whilst others were stuck.

Plus I get joy of changing them myself with my son who thoroughly enjoyed the trolley jack and torque wrench.

Maybe I should put the 22" back on two at a time and try the local steep hill to see the difference.

I hear the issue on the A30 was caused in part by HGVs and Cars blocking the road with no way for anyone to pass so I doubt that winter tyres would have been of any benefit...
