A very unhelpful response which suggested I take the car back to the dealers for them to take a look - despite me writing that I have already done this and the dealer's have said there is nothing more they can do despite admitting the headlights are a little on the weak side!

Have sent another email to Volvo UK but suspect no further response will be forthcoming
What an ignorant response. How stupid do they think we all are? The first thing to do when you have a problem is hold your hands up and admit it. That takes most of the sting out of a situation. By putting your fingers in your ears and then running around pretending not to hear is a surefire way to annoy and irritate.

If Volvo do check these forums then READ THIS - NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Gel - It might go to -60C but I don't. If you use that then you can clean your windscreen beautifully for 3 seconds before you die of hypothermia.

I think you're OK if you swallow some before you go outside first!

Do you know what? Without exeption, I've taken every brand new car into the workshop and had the beams adjusted. The beam has always been way below the limit on each car. I always get the beam raised up to just below the line. This doesn't mean you dazzle oncoming traffic and I use the beam control whenever I have people in the back and stuff in the boot.

Some cars are worse than others. BMW's are always bad and both Volvos I've had weren't good. The terrible Peugeot I unfortunately currently have wasn't too bad. However, each franchise has obligingly adjusted my lights.

Sorry to say, I can't speak from experience about a V50 as I've never had one! But even though I've read that some of you have had your lights adjusted, I'd recomend that anyone who hasn't, does!

Default Dipped Headlight

My Wife has driven her S40 for 3 years since new, I complained initially to the Volvo Garage on exactly the same issue as you , theychanged the headlight unit s there was a slight improvement.I changed the headlight level on the dipped beam and I have changed the headlight bulbs to ones that improve the brightnes by 90% with out much improvement. As I only occasionally drive the car I forgot how poor they are. I had reason to be driving her car regularly at nightime over the festive period and was reminded of how poor they are. They actaully RUIN a great car. I am now actively trying to persu this problem and will be emailing customer care at Volvo to rais this issue. We need some mor momentiom on this crucial safety issue.

I am open to any suggestions to persue this issue.

1 – lidl screen wash – have just come back from Austria skiing and drove there. Before going I emptied my screen wash and refilled with lidl -60. Had absolutely no probs and performed excellently even with temps down to -14. Although we don’t get -60 temps, when driving on motorways at speed in freezing conditions, the wind chill causes dramatic temp drops so that last year my -20 screen wash froze at the jets.
2 – my dipped beam on an 07 xc70 is also appalling and I have had to lift the beam to be able to see. When I changed from an 02 to 07 xc70 I thought it would be better but it wasn’t. High beam is excellent. I also live in the country and the problem is that ok I drive slow to be able to see with these poor headlights but I then have people 2 inches from my bumper wanting to go faster and trying to overtake. On rural roads this is suicide not only to the maniac but to the other road user and me who has young children. Better lighting would allow me to make reasonable progress safely
