Possible Fuel Pump Not Working

Hi There,

I have a 2002 S60 2.4 D5 and it takes a long time to start. It cranks over fine (new-ish starter motor and good battery) but much longer than it used to. The time to start is longer the less fuel in the tank and when warm or just switched off, will start on a couple of cranks. I have checked the heater plugs and they SEEM fine; they all heat up and glow but this takes a little time (the heater light on the dash goes out very quickly). If I turn the ignition on and count 10 seconds, this makes no difference to the number of times it cranks over.

Am I correct in thinking there is a problem with the in-tank fuel pump? (Checked the fuse and it is still in tact.) If so, is it a tricky job?

By way of background, the car has done 228,000 miles. Regularly serviced by Volvo up to 200,000 (I've continued to change oil and filters regularly. Pads, discs, bushes etc. as necessary.) Once going still sits at 80 to 85 smoke free, with plenty of 'poke' and I don't think I've ever top up the oil between changes. A great car, indeed!
