Default Very stuck on wheel bolts

Hi all,

Ive not had my 850 long about 2 months now.

I was going to change the worn front brake pads today when i found that the last owner has thoughtfully kept the locking wheel bolts for his/herself (which dosent bother me) but they have fitted a crude bare steel bolt on each corner to replace them.

They have seriously overtightened the bolts and the steel bolts have almost welded themselves to the alloy wheels, the remaining 4 alloy coloured bolts on each wheel came free with a 4 foot extension bar and some persuasion but these remainding steel bolts have snapped 1 wheel wrench, bent another and bent the 4 foot bar on me so far!!.

Does anyone have any advise/tips on free-ing the offending bolts?.

Many thanks

Andy.

You could ask Quickfit nicely if they could slacken them off with their airgun thingy. Sure they'd give it a go. Just don't mention you want to change the brakes as they'll push you into letting them do it.

An impact wrench on these is a must. If your leverage efforts have not worked you run risk of bolt shearing. I would though try some Plus Gas or other penetrating oil as no doubt the winter's salt has aided the bi-metallic corrosion between the two.

Yep - Impact wrench is the answer. If you haven't got a compressor try a 12V electric one - around £40 and well worth it.

Hi all

Just thought id let you know how i got them off.

I borrowed my mates snap-on power bar and 19mm socket, sprayed some plusgas on them the night before and with a bit of elbow grease they each popped free with an almighty bang and a small cloud off white dust where the alloy had corroded/mated with the steel at high temps.

new set of bolts/lockers today i think, and the 2 lessons ive learned are always use the the correct type bolts and torque settings and snap-on tools really are good quality and well worth the money!!!

Thanks to all who helped!

Andy.
