Default Presentation and mirror replacement

Hi everyone,

I'm new here, as I'm a 1 week old owner of a 01' XC70.
I'm still discovering its quirks and foibles, mostly mynor so far.

My question concerns the auto dipping mirror. It's kind of stuck, with the top half clearer and the bottom darker. At night, it makes it almost useless.
I don't know if someone with a similar issue, knows of any fix to this ?

Also, I think I remember reading it here in the forum, that it's no use buying it second hand, as the electronics inside are "tied" to the VIN of the original car, is it true ?

Thanks

It is possible to replace the mirror galss without replacing the whole mirror assemble, which is extremely expensive. This is not an uncommon fault with dipping mirrors on many makes of car.

There are a few guides on YouTube. You have to take the whole thing apart and detach the old mirror wiring from the unit and replace it with a replacement. I don't know if you can buy the mirror galss itself new, but the YouTube thing is replacing aknackered mirror glass with a second hand one.
