Which (excuse the pun) brings us back to the 4-pot versus 6-pot debate.

Just to put that into perspective, in 2013 the 15 biggest container ships in the world emitted more NOx than all cars everywhere worldwide. Since then container ships have got much much bigger and their emissions and the sulphurous fuel they burn, no cleaner, so I suspect it is now nearer the biggest ten or a dozen ships in the world emit more NOx than all cars in the world combined on any given day.
Fact is that Euro5 and Euro6 cars are far and away cleaner than any diesel engine made only ten years ago and still used daily, let alone those stinky smokey noisy diesel cars of twenty plus years ago. As the country's diesel and petrol fleet get younger, or more correctly as the older ones are put out of commission, the average emission levels decline along with air quality improving. The biggest contributors to town air quality improvement has actually been pedestrianisation and improvement in bus and taxi emissions. Aircraft and diesel trains also make up a substantial percentage of emissions and far more than modern cars. Another gross polluter in town is the petrol engine of the motorbike and scooter. |

I think it has more to do with whether SCR/Adblue is more effective than Lean NOx Storage catalysts combined with a high percentage of EGR. I believe that not only is SCR more effective, especially when combined with a small percentage of cooled EGR, but that it gives a significant economy advantage even after the cost of urea is included. It does add another complex system to the car of course. A system that is prone to failure. So a compromise has to be decided upon by the manufacturer and the customer within the legal imperative of passing the actual official mandatory test of course.
