cleaning seat belt latch
'67 P220
Is there a good way to clean the internals of the seatbelt latch ? When I squeeze it it does not retract fully making it hard to engage or disengage with the floor loop. It is as if 50 years of dust and lint have built up in the slides. Thanks Greg |

I'd start by washing it out with brake cleaner. If it frees up, wash again and allow to dry for a while. Lube lightly with something like GT 85. Hopefully the wire spring hasn't broken and is jamming things up. Apparently new ones are available but it means unrivetting the plates. Bottom line, look for another good belt.

Spring ? I had never tried the passenger side clip before. I'm guessing that is the problem.

Finally got around to taking the seatbelt latch apart. The spring was broken into 5 pieces. New spring, new screws and a little LPS and it works like new.
It should be noted that the rivets are barrel shaped and can not be driven out from one side. The peens on both sides have to drilled out and the halves pried apart. |
