Hi there -

...delighted with the 'one owner from new, service stamps to date, 2002 2.5 D5 V70'. Took it out for a spin yesterday along the A50 & was impressed with acceleration, top speed (cough cough) and breaking.

However, less impressed when we heard what sounded like a grass-hopper in the engine! The noise is coming from one of the pulley wheels from the belt on the off-side of the engine.

There are 5 wheels in the pully system, 2 large, 3 small. The lower, smaller one, just infront of the driver's feet is the culprit. Its got a nice little wiggle on it. I'm presuming its requires a new bearing - might be something to do with my top speed - but is this a straight forward DIY job & where best to get non-Volvo-brand good quality spare parts from - based in Stafford.

"non-Volvo-brand good quality spare parts from "

In my view such a thing does not exist.

Have a search on here for tensioner failure, this will lead you in the right direction.

My advice is to replace with the genuine Volvo part, tensioner failure can and has wrecked engines.

the pulley is meant to wobble a touch as it self centres , but if its noisy thats a different matter ... get the genuine one , very reasonably priced ..

My grasshopper/cricket has been diagnosed as the alternator. I've had the sound since I picked the car up in July '06 done 60K miles since- its staying as it is until it fails.

Had mine done end of last year, genuine about 500-550, I had a bosch re-con as warranty company wouldn't pay for genuine, that worked out about 425-450 fitted inc vat. Apparently the bearing can be changed but it is 50/50 if it can be gotten off, the bearing is about 100 or so.

Hth

P.S the bearing can jam, snap the belt which has been known to do the cambelt so try not and run it too long with the bearing on it's way

Forgot to mention that my local indy garage reckons that volvo supplied part may well be re-con, it came with a years warranty too

I have the same, VADIS makes it look easy to replace, but then what doesn't it make look easy lol. I'm going to pop by to my local Bosch dealer tomorrow and see if they can get the pulley for me, I'll report back what they say
