Our cars did have a recall for rear suspension geometry IIRC, which affects rear, and front wear (I got adjustable rear arms on mine, and front and rear wear improved considerably.

I have noticed that in the Volvo I drive and the Almera that the wife has, we both get road noise on some surfaces and not so much on others. Dont know if its cheap tarmac they are using as some potholes that were repaired after the last winter; are falling apart again. It only happens for a little while and at out time in life, a little bit of road noise is the least of our problems. Now bearings going, thats a different matter. Had that pleasure.

I've got the same noise in my V50. I have had it a couple of months now and didn't immediately notice it but recently the noise has become more obvious. After reading through this thread i went and checked both rear tyres and the one on the side i thought the noise was coming from has got what i would call stepping but literally only 1mm difference from front to back of tread if you know what i mean?! Is this enough to cause the noise? I also checked the pressures and all the other tyres were spot on 36psi but this tyre only had 22psi in it. To be honest it never really looked any lower than the others and i would imagine it has been like this for at least the 2 months ive had it. Could that have caused the slight step in the tyre and the noise?.

22psi is too low.. .and could have caused those issues IMHO.

Craney - Yes my tread is like that. What make of tyre do you have that is like this?
I understand that directional tread tyres are bad on these cars at the rear as I have cheapies the stealer put on when sold. Does the S40 suffer from this I wonder?
One other thing is will branded tyres stop this as tyre suppliers I have spoken to can't guarantee it happening again.
It was interesting to note that the cheapies were quiet when new and it's only the last few months I have noticed the rumble.

They are Goodyear Efficient grip.

So it does happen to branded tyres then? I can't see the point of putting on £100 plus tyres for this to happen again!

From my bit of research it seems the symmetrical Goodyear F1 "type" of pattern can be a bit of a pain in the arse whether it be Linlongs or Goodyears - in my case it was Avon ZZ3s which isn't a cheap tyre. As much as this type of tread pattern looks good, it's not worth the possible issues.

I had a look on the net to see the tread of the goodyear eff grip and that isn't directional like the linglong rubbish I've been unlucky to have. So that means both styles of tread are prone to this problem??
Perhaps the V50's are just prone to it. If this is the case then I can't see top branded tyres are worth the risk on the back, i.e you are going to replace them before the tread gets down to it's limit.
Hmm, interesting?!?

What you need is a proper 'all wheel alignment' find soeone who has the 'Hunter' alignment kit and get the cars geometary set up correctly and this wiil extinguish all your tyre problems.

There may be the need to purchase camber bolts to be fitted to the rear to enable the job to be done properly, but well well worth it.

Check out this site - LINKY - to find a local garage in your area that has the Hunter kit. If there is more than one then it is well worth using any performance places over a standard garage/accident repair centre.
