Space Saver
Just a quick one,
I'm trying to track down a spacesaver for my XC70. 2008 P3 D5-185 fitted with 18" wheels. will a 16" spacesaver fit? there seems to be that or 17" but they are significantly more expensive. Thanks. |

You may run into problem with brake caliper clearance with a 16" wheel. Overall diameter could also be an issue.
The genuine 17" spare is already significantly down in diameter from the standard tyres on an xc70. Having said that, the same spare is also used for the xc60 which has even taller standard tyres. You can get a genuine 17" wheel and tyre from Volvo for just over £50, last time I saw it mentioned on here. Give FRF a call (not e-mail or forum) with VIN and forum discount code. Check their details and code on the 1st page of their thread in the traders section |

What do you mean by a genuine 17" wheel and tyre? I paid a Volvo dealer three times that amount just for the stupid skinny spare thing. Why Volvo don't provide adequate storage for a full size spare I really don't know. I've NEVER in 50 years of car ownership had to use one of these silly compact spares nor the even worse can of gunge. I'd have expected better from Volvo. What the hell do serious Volvo users in hostile climates and terrain use for a spare? It's my only serious criticism of my CX70. If I can find a cheap matching full size alloy wheel for a spare, I'll fix it in the rear cargo area and put up with the reduced load space on long journeys.

I am referring to the 17" tempa skinny spare that fits in the wheel well. I bought one a year ago.
I believe the police xc70's had a bar/bracket in the boot that held a full size spare in a vertical position. If it is only for spare why wait for something matching. Even full size spares, on cars that carry them, are usually steel. Last edited by 1monkey600; Jul 20th, 2018 at 23:44. |

Seems to vary between manufacturers.

Just on the note of skinny spares, a different poster on another thread made a point that if you got a puncture on a front wheel you should swap one of the rear tyres for the punctured front and put the skinny spare on the rear. Maybe you all know that and I apologise if you do, but i thought it a good point.
It is also more commen that if you use a gooey puncture kit to effect a temporary repair, garages on the continent will replace the tyre but not repair it. This is due to the regulations around the goo having to be disposed of. So,you may get to a garage but they will not repair your puncture ( only fit a new one ) unless they have the facilities to dispose of the goo.
