My D5 has done 312,000 miles and still has the original water pump. It turns smoothly and has no signs of deterioration.

The water pumps are reliable, but then most of the rest of the car is as well. There are certain items that must be changed at a fixed interval time/mileage.

My policy with any thing else is" if it aint broke dont fix it". Changing parts for the sake of it seems stupid. A lot of "while you do this you ought to change that" is more a marketing ploy than good engineering practice.
The best maintenance is being vigilant check things regularly and react when something doesn't seem right.
My car never gets a fixed service it has a rolling maintenance plan that goes from one MOT to the next.

Fantastic news (to me) I wonder which manufacturer is making these indestructible water pumps ?
Can't be the same people who make the VAG water pumps thats's for sure as VAG advises changing them every 60K miles / same time as Cam belt change interval.

yes the VW pump on the 5 cylinder VW van engine volvo used from 1997 to 2001 had troublesome water pumps . as do the Ford 1.6 D Violvo use , not so bad on those though they sometime weep rather than fail .

The pumps are made by Aisin a Japanese original equipment supplier.

The VAG pumps suffered from the plastic impellor coming loose on the shaft or breaking up. It was a very bad design and a poor choice of materials.
