Update on this. My brother's friend is a good amateur mechanic and very kindly offered to have a look at the offending wheel late last night.
We jacked up the car and the wheel could turn but not freely. We took the wheel off and then the brake caliper off and the central hub could then turn freely so he told me it wasn't the handbrake. He looked at the caliper and told me that the piston was seized. He tried to release it but we were limited by how much noise we could make (midnight in a residential area), he cleaned down everything and lubricated the relevant parts and put it all back together. The wheel was then turning about twice as freely as it was before we started which looked promising. I then took it for a 5 minute test drive including a lot of intermittent breaking and unfortunately it had seized on again! At least I know it the caliper. I don't suppose any local garages would have these in stock this morning so I am going to have to go on holiday in a 2005 Ford Fiesta instead - bring on the sore back! Thanks for your help. Gordon |

You may be lucky to find one in stock at a local motor factors but probably unlikely. I don't think it work looking at second hand parts for brakes unless you're really very desperate to get it back on the road very quickly, especially when the new prices are as low as these here https://www.partsforvolvosonline.com...dd8c13baf261b1
I've been using a PFS rear caliper on my V70 for more than a few years since I had the same issue as you - sticking rear NS caliper, and it's been fine

I had this very problem a few weeks ago on my 2006 S60 D5. I noticed that at speed on the motorway there seemed to be a vibration coming from the rear.
Coming home form work one night I decided the check to see if there was anything obvious. I noticed that one of the rear wheels was hot and the other was cold. On touching the disc (bad move) as it nearly took the skin of my fingers, it was red hot whilst the other was warm to the touch. Turned out to be a sticking calliper. I got a replacement calliper form Eurocarparts at a cost of £75. It said re-manufactured on the box but when it came out it looked brand new. Really easy to change and only took 30 mins to swap over and a quick bleed of the brakes. For good measure I replaced the rear discs, pads and handbrake shoes. Now runs like a dream. I think if you leave it for too long it will warp the discs and the wheel bearing can get very hot and fail. Plus MPG will suffering as well.So worth doing ASPA. |

I had to change the wheel bearing and driveshaft boot (changed whole driveshaft) after my front caliper seized on highway.
