The L322 Range Rovers I owned had exactly the same set up, and they also worked fine, and they have to hold back 3 tons on a slope! (Although they did have adjusters, though never needed adjusting)

Still waiting for these "facts"... - you have to back these things up Macmike

This is also why a common modification is to fit adjustable expanders off an XC90 (I think its an XC90) on the none opening side.
Discs have little impact nor do cables unless really stretched.
So if youve fitted new shoes and adjusted the cable, well done you , itll work well, for a short amount of time.
If you look closely you will see the shoe ends with the fixed bar are not connected to anywhere they fully float so that when the other ends expand out the two shoes act as one and clamp fully all the way around , that is why the car sometimes moves an inch or two before the handbrake shoes hit the cast alloy stop , it's clever stuff :-)

What do you mean by a short amount of time?

I did my handbrake using no additional adjusters 4 years ago and it's still perfect.

FYI: Unlike the kit linked to above, the Centric kit includes new springs and shoe retainers.
Just add Volvo shoes!

I finally gave up trying to get them to work as standard about a year ago and put the adjusters in, I backed off the lever adjuster put in new volvo shoes and springs opened up the wheel adjuster until the disc just slipped on easily and then took up the slack with the lever adjuster, since then they've been as good as the ones on my PI or my old 850 which for me set the standard.

Did you run out of lever adjustment on the lever adjuster before you put the adjusters between the shoes?

And I have an assembly question.
Regarding the two main parts: Should I lube the threads before screwing them together?

One theory is not to in the name of "good old metal-to-metal contact". Plus you want minimal grease in a compact brake assembly.

Others include lube 'em to keep dirt out, prevent rust and to lube in general.
