Default 2005 XC70 Pollen filter - air flow direction?

Hi. I am looking at replacing the pollen filter on my 2005 XC70 D5 auto. The filter housing has 2 slots, one thin and one wide for a multi filter with charcoal. The difference is due to whether the car has the Air Quality System fitted, which mine has.

I took off the panel and found a thin pollen filter fitted into the wide slot nearest the front of the car, which was totally wrong. The filter literally fell out. I phoned my local Volvo dealer and they quoted me £49 for a charcoal multifilter. After looking on line, I can get an equivalent filter, Mann CUK 2855/1 for a lot less.

However, on researching how to fit the filter on YouTube, I have found conflicting information regarding the air flow direction. One video says to fit the filter with the air flow arrows pointing towards the front of the car, yet another shows fitting a filter with the air flow arrows pointing towards the rear of the car.

The filter that fell out the XC70 had the arrows facing forward and the multifilter fitted to my 2007 S60 is also fitted with the arrows facing forward. However, after seeing the videos on YouTube I am now questioning which is the correct orientation.

I would appreciate any thoughts on the Air Flow direction when fitting a Pollen Filter?

If my memory is still good, it's from the rear of the car towards the front of it - so the first video would be the correct one. You can also look with a flashlight to find the hole that goes inside the CCM. Does the new filter have an 'angle' at the top end ? That would also force it to fit only one way because the other way it won't go all the way in

Funny enough, my thin Mann filter didn't fit well inside the front slot (the one towards the rear of the car), so I put it into the wider slot for the AQS filter (my car has the air quality sensor). Perhaps that's why your old thin filter was in the larger slot as well.

Hi. Thanks for the speedy reply. I have just purchased a Volvo thick multifilter off eBay for £26.99, which is a good saving compared with my local Volvo dealer. I will take your advice and have a good squint at the “angles” and the filter lumps and bumps, etc. when it arrives. Being a big fella with health problems, looking up the hole is not easy, but I will take a photo with my phone and see if that gives any clues. I will post my results when I receive the filter and try to fit it. All good fun. Thanks again oragex, appreciated.

It's really easy to tell the air flow direction: once you have the filter out, turn on the fan

You can feel which direction the air is flowing...

If I remember correctly the last time I changed my pollen filter which is the thicker one, it had some cuts in the filter to allow you to bend it so you could get the filter in the slot, the cuts faced the floor and the top of the filter is shaped and will only allow the filter to go fully in if its the correct way round.
