Well, I did have a siezed caliper piston as well, but the mechanic managed to unsieze it with me helping him when I got the wheel bearing change. Perhaps it siezed again!? Although, the noise didn't go away after he replaced the wheel bearing and unseized the piston. Hmm..

BTW, Yes, I think its fun to reply to your own posts!

To update the situation...After lubing up the bearing (or at least close to the bearing) with some wheel bearing grease, the noise did not go away after the first day, nor the second day, however; Lucky number 3!

Both yesterday and today I haven't heard it all, so perhaps it took a few more drives for the grease to get inside the bearing, espeically since I didn't pull off the dust protector or whatever its called (I can't remember).

My only other guess is that the past two days it's been 30+ degrees Celcius here in Toronto, so perhaps the humidity/heat has something to do with it.

Cheers,
Tim

Default whining 240

1990 240 DL Wagon

I'm also having a whining noise when cold start now. I've had the car for 1 winter already and no problem, and this past month, a drastic shift from 97 degrees to 54 degrees overnight not only created the whining noise, but also busted a freon hose.

Since then, it happens on every cold start, less often on warm days. When the engine warms up through out it goes away, or becomes more inaudible.

I've narrowed it down to somewhere near the back of the head and firewall, that general vicinity. It's a harmonic whining above the engine sound I'm used to.

Insights welcome, thanks!

By whining, you might mean the standard 240 cold start roar from the fan. This should quieten down fairly quickly as the thermostatic coupling in the fan boss warms up and allows the fan to slip.
