Weird 'Creaking' noise on O/s rear wheel

A few days ago my car developed a wierd creaking noise on the Off side rear wheel, it increases/decreases with speed but isnt always present, when it is though it can get quite loud. Its not brake related as gently applying the handbrake or foot brake doesnt make any difference while its occuring. the hub has been replaced in the last few months along with a new disc and a new caliper, the tyre is as new. I stripped it down again yesterday but could find nothing wrong, the hub is still as new and has zero play in it. Any help would be greatfully received as I'm about to set fire to it or call in a priest.

You don't say what model of car yours is, but if its the 850 T5 it could well be a delta link bush. I've experienced both a knocking and creaking when mine were on the way out..

Hi TC

No ideas but I think of a creaking noise as intermittent. Is your noise intermittent? Every second, every minute?

Can you tell us if it gets louder with speed, or does the intermittent noise happen more frequently?
Or when it happens, is it a continuous noise?
Is it affected by bumps or road surface or turning?
Is it affected by the car bouncing?

Its a very early V70R (97) and I have been told that the delta link bushes have had it, how would this causea creaking noise from the wheel though?

Well I've now replaced the Delta link Bush on the offending side and also swapped the wheel bearing again net result... Nadda.... noise has now progressed from a gentle creaking noise to a squeek.. also now noticing a vibration while driving. Noise definitely sounds like the offside however I think I'm going to do the nearside as well just to be safe. Really at the end of my tether with this thing now.

Well.. the first thing is don't give up.

Unfortunately noises and vibrations can transmit through various channels giving you the run around. The thing is, trying to second guess via the internet when you don't have the vehicle in front of you is nigh on impossible.

Squeaking though, to me sounds suspension related, as opposed to drive train. Are the rear road springs seated correctly, with no breakages. Condition of rear shocks?

It can be very difficult to pin down the exact location of some noises.

I had a lot of creaking on my 1998 V70 Tdi which I was convinced was from the rear of the car. Neither I nor the local independant Volvo specialist could find anything wrong in that area.

However since the front suspension was getting rather tired, I'd decided to replace the front shock absorbers, springs and spring seats anyway. On dismantling it all it was quite obvious that the spring seats were completely knackered. The dampers still seemed fine but they and the springs were too corroded to reuse.

So after fitting new genuine Volvo spring seats, Sachs dampers and Lesjofors springs, I found all the noises had vanished; including the ones I was sure were from the rear.

1998 V70 Tdi Auto 226,000 miles

I replaced a shot Top mount on the front just the 0ther day (pot hole damage), the rest of the front end is in reasonable condition. I think I'm just going to have to let whatever it is develop to the point that its totally obvious what it is before I can go about rectifying it.
