It depends which way you do it. You'll get more out if you drain the engine block first, then the radiator. However, you're never going to get all the coolant out of the engine/radiator anyway (You'll get maybe 6 litres out at a push, but there's always going to be some left that you can't drain). The handbook states 12.5 litres of coolant is required, but that's on a brand new/dry engine, which yours isn't. The trick is to measure what comes out when you drain it - Use some old containers or cartons of some sort to calculate it. Then put the same amount of new concentrate coolant back into the engine.

For example, lets say a dry/brand new engine takes 12.5 litres, you drain 6 litres out of yours, that leaves 6.5 litres in the engine that you can't drain anyway. Put 6 litres of new concentrate back in, that will mix with what's already in the engine & give you a fairly decent concentration ratio. Your car may be different to this of course, as it depends how much you actually drain as to how much you need to put back in. This is just to give you an idea

Use genuine Volvo concentrate coolant though ideally, not the ready mixed if possible. Using the ready mixed coolant will give you a weaker mix simply because there's water already in it & that's going to mix with what you couldn't drain out of your car, so concentrate is your best bet really. Volvo coolant will last longer & you won't need to do this job for a long time again, so its worth putting the right stuff in.

The simplest way to check a thermostat nowadays is just to view the coolant temperature with diagnostics. A £5 ELM327 will do just fine for this but you'll need Dice and Vida to recalibrate the CCM or interrogate further for information on the cabin, evaporator and air quality sensor which could all affect the performance of the HVAC system.

I've done loads of D5 coolant changes and it definitely isn't 12 litres despite what the manual says.
Total capacity is 8 litres max which requires 4 litres of Volvo concentrated.
If you put in 6 litres of concentrate, the mixture will be too strong and less efficient at cooling.

After draining the old I would flush the system forwards and backwards with clean water and a final flush with deionised water before draining and filling with 4 litres of concentrate and topping up with deionised water.
The end result will last 5+ years easily and there's a detailed change video on my YouTube channel.

You say that after 3 miles the top hose is just mildly warm ? It should be properly warm and suggests that your thermostat is either stuck open or opening too soon.

I say 'mildly warm' meaning it would warm your hand if said hand was cold but it wouldn't roast it to the point that you would pull your hand away and say 'Ouch!'.
Luke warm may be a better description. The journey was approximately 5 mins long from totally cold. Does that make sense?
Unfortunately the car doesn't have a temperature display.

Guys
My car heater is a bit disappointing. The blower works fine but even after a 30 minute motorway drive there is no real heat even with the climate control set to high also. It's not freezing but it's no better than mildly warm. I'm guessing the thermostat is the issue. Am I right? If so, is this a simple or a tricky fix?
The obvious question is what does the coolant temperature gauge read ? ( If you have one ! )

As suggested above get an ELM 327 bluetooth device for about £5 to plug in the diagnostic socket and you can read out the coolant temp and all sorts of other parameters on your phone with the " Torque" app .
The thermostat is very expensive and hard to change on this engine so prove it faulty first . I have never known one fail yet ..

Have you been out on a longer journey yet to test the heater ? Do you know you have an electric element in the heater which warms the air whilst the engine warms up? You should get warm air in under a minute . Although it is the coldest part of the winter currently , a longer drive may show the heater ok?
