Cheers, I've just ordered it from a Volvo dealer - £5.10 (an expensive piece of foam, might be better to buy some generic foam in future and cut it to shape).

you need to make sure the foam is oil resistant and also that the air can pass through it , some foam does not allow this

The paper filter will do a better job at filtering than a K&N .. And probably give less restriction given the huge area of paper .

I'm looking at getting the K&N one, haven't fitted it yet. Unsure if I should go for the standard replacement or the "oversized one" which comes with a new cover for the airbox to accommodate it.. There's a big price difference (£60 vs £160), curious whether it could possibly be worth it.

I think the oversized one might be a little bit too loud. Does not really suit the Volvo characteristics.

I hear a lot of people say that the standard drop in K&N improves the throttle response a little bit and better torque at lower rpm. not a huge improvement but noticeable.

I am a little bit afraid of the TMAP sensor though, which is downstream of the air filter.

Thats exactly what I would say. I think Clan misunderstood you thinking about cone filter, but if you ask about drop-in vs paper OEM one, I agree its a small but noticable improvement. It doesnt magically give you more HP nor it will change the intake sound, but there was a sublime difference when I installed it and car become a bit more "nippy". I snapped it for like 35e so it was a no brainer.
