update - even the good lady volvette has noticed that the car is now silky-smooth. But apparantly I cant change a lightbulb properly. She may do the next ones herself.

Flat battery - driver's door lock won't work T5 1999
Wonderful - the hazards were knocked and left on as we all left home. 7 hours later battery flat and as the driver's door unlocks with electricity, it wouldn't.
So googled - jack car up and attached charger to starter motor. The connection is above the starter so not accessible from below. Procedure: Jack up nearside wheel (not using a jack locked inside car!), place bricks under to support safely. Remove plastic cover (two 10mm hex screws) below radiator. Then you can see there is a barely visible piece of thick red wire coming down from the battery covered in a hose. Cut rubber hose along short length of wire/cable, it's quite thick with nylon thread reinforcement to expose red cable. Use clamp or cable tie to hold back hose. Cut a bit off the red insulation to expose copper inside. Connect charger +ve to exposed copper and -ve to metal on car that will make a spark. Hazards start working! Zapper unlocks car. Door can then be opened and bonnet lifted to charge battery. Replace hose tying both ends with cable ties. Jack up a little, remove bricks, allow a few hours to charge car. Reset radio code and clock. What a faff for a Saturday morning. Why isn't the driver's door manual so the key will open it? It's the only keyhole as well as the passenger door and tailgate don't have keyholes... which older Volvos always had. |

Found and repaired a spilt vacuum hose. Also went to change rear bumper and snapped bolt.

Checked front wheel bearings as have a rumbling road noise, even though passed the MOT last month. Felt vibration in the o/s coil spring when spinning the wheel. New bearing kit ordered.

Flat battery - driver's door lock won't work T5 1999
Cookeh - 850s and earlier S/V70s may have had manual driver's door / boot / tailgate locks, but my Feb1999 T5 V70 has only one door with a keyhole, the driver's. The tailgate lock space is blanked off, and there's no interior handle either, nor is there a keyhole for the passenger front door (I used to have a 940 Wentworth estate which had this, as did the 760 and 245 estates I had before that). The locking mechanism requires electricity to both lock and unlock. Turning the key with a flat battery does nothing at all. Turn key with charged battery, and click...all locks unlock. All the key does is close a contact to lock or unlock all locks.

How strange! My Jan 2000 V70[a P1 but not a T5]has a key hole in the drivers door-like yours the tailgate lock is blanked off and no key hole on passenger door-but with a flat battery or even with the battery removed altogether for charging the key still unlocks the car.In this state it only unlocks the drivers door rather than all of them until battery has some life in it/is re-fitted when normal central locking resumes.

By the way I've not laid eyes on my V70 for the last 5 weeks as one of my step daughters has borrowed it for her commute while her 12yr younger car[none Volvo]is assessed/repaired after its engine blew up on her way home from work one evening.
