What sort of V40 do I have????

OK odd question I know, I'm new to V40s but not Volvos.

Here in Poland there is very little information on the registration document, and I think the bloke who I bought it off really didn't understand my less than fluent Polish, so when I asked he replied, in Polish: "Blue" ....then sneered a very telling sneer..!

All it states on my reg document is VOLVO, VW1203, V40 1.8 (it's a 1998), and there's no badge on the back not sure what vw1203 means or whether it's relevant.

It's done a huge mileage but bodywise and interior it is wonderful, runs as rich as anything I have smelled and the stink of petrol reminds me of my first motorbikes, let alone cars. Think it may be doing less than 20 miles to the gallon....... !! my old 245 used to get at least 28.

Already reading through loads of threads and realising it has many v40/s40 issues.

....and if anyone has a pdf of an English language owners manual I would dearly love a copy as there is nothing with it whatsoever.

Also would some kind soul please list what bulbs I need as there is nothing like a halfords here with handy guides

Many thanks,
James

You can download PDF iowner's manuals from Volvo, even for the older cars:
https://www.volvocars.com/uk/support/cars

There is also a Volvo app that allows you to download and read the PDF owner's manual on your smartphone. Look for it in the smartphone shop of your choice.

Thank you Bantambuddy but I live in Poland and it's a LHD Polish registered Volvo V40, the website you mention is for the UK.

Hi

If you get the VIN number starting YV or similar put it into the VIN search on the skandix website
https://www.skandix.de/en/vehicle-identification/
That should help

Thank you!

This is the result:
Car Model Volvo V40 (to 2004)
Body shape 5-Doors
Model year 1998
Factory code F
Chassis No. 192059
Engine type B4184S
Transmission type M3P

any ideas what Factory code means?

I know its a 1998 1.8 (1731cc) but have no idea what the trim level is, it seems quite high though, but there is no badge on the back and nothing in the Polish log book.

Additionally it has no skirts/skirting, which I thought was odd, but I have seen two other v40s without skirts in this past week, no idea what age they are as Polish registrations don't display that info. I cannot see anywhere on my car where the skirting would have been fixed either....

EDIT: apparently, according to engine types on good old wikipedia it was just badged as a V40 1.8 or a V40 1.8 16V....... don't really want to take bits off just to count valves right now.

https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Vehicl...olvo/VIN_Codes

F = [The Netherlands] Born Plant (NEDCAR)

I assume you found https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Modular_engine and it does state that all the petrol engines were 16v
