Car looks like it's had a hard life, judging by the exhaust and given its a Stage 2. I'd be worried that the supporting mods were not done properly, which could be terrible.
sorry mate this is incorrect. 2000 - 2004 was 2.3 T5--- 2005-2009 is 2.4 T5

Default T5 engine

I've had my T5 for 6 years and it is a bit heavy on the oil which is either leaking into the turbo or via worn stem seals. There's always blue smoke after a roll down a long hill, but very light grey smoke and good turbo boost after a hard acceleration over a quarter mile. So the turbo works OK, the engine runs OK and it's done 160,000 miles. Downside is that pootling around only gives you 27 mpg. A long motorway run gives 31-32 mpg.

Wink CHECK OUT the MOT HISTORY

It might be worth you checking the car's recent MOT history using https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ before you commit yourself further.

It would be interesting to find out what was done and by whom to get it through this year's MOT at a third attempt in a two month period when no mileage increase was recorded on the odometer during that time.

Agreed^^^^^^^^^

The MOT history checker is a godsend to buyers as there is no hiding on previous maintenance.

On the face of it the add reads quite promising and I like the idea of a car being 'enthusiast maintained' for 16 years. However, the MOT history would suggest the only thing the previous owner was enthusiastic about was saving money on maintenance.

They are strong and will withstand abuse and neglect well, up to a point. I think that's often the problem with people buying old ones, they hide poor treatment.

Our 2003 car was run up to 170k odd by my ex wife in a brutal fashion, booted from cold to the redline most days and she would only put oil in when the pressure light was flickering. We sold it on to a friend for buttons who has continued to thrash it without mercy and it's now on over 200k with rental car treatment for most of it. It uses a fair bit of oil now, but still pulls as hard as ever.

I'm sure one day (soon) it'll die horribly, but right now we could tart it up and sell it on as a carefully owned and fully serviced example if we spent 10 minutes with a rubber stamp. You'd have no idea it had been so abused until you had to put a litre of oil in every 1k miles, by which point it's too late and you think these engines are crap!

I haven't checked online if you posted a link but, owning something for a long time or spending 2p on it does not equate to an enthusiast.

Its also possible that people like me who spare no expense could have the odd thing go un-noticed between an MOT if you're not mechaniclly skilled and just get things addressed as and when or at service intervals but, even so if thats the case, a MOT history should show very little over a period of time.

Question

Ultimately we all act on best advice, to check the MOT history is simply "best advice", there is no suggestion that anyone has cut corners, we all tend to economise wherever or whenever possible.

The important point here is that YOU need to know what was or what has not done in order to pass the emission test ie was an "Italian Tune Up" carried out aka high speed run to clear the Cat to get it through the test BUT PLEASE NOTE - the mileage has not increased over the 2 month and 3 test time scale - so it was neither road run nor rolling road stressed.

So what was/was not done to get it through the test?

What was replaced, which parts were fitted or was it an "empathetic" test?

Was the MOT carried out by the seller or their agents?

With such low mileage on the clock one wouldn't anticipate an emission problem in the first place - the back box hasn't been change, one assumes that the mid box and cat are also unchanged.

Think long and hard here - yes, it appears to be a lovely motor, but it clearly has had problems and from what one infers from the MOT record, they may not have been full corrected or addressed i.e if a new CAT is really what is needed you're looking at big expanse at the next MOT unless you know a "sympathetic" MOT'er

No aspersions whatsoever are attached to any information which the seller may have provided, the bottom line here is "caveat emptor" i.e "Let the buyer beware". You get what you pay for................
