Volvo V70 P2 - New Suspension
Looks like I have a broken spring on the front, I thought this might be a good time to replace the front suspension.
I saw a video on YouTube where the man replaced with a Sachs kit that had the springs already installed, looked pretty straight forward to replace. Appreciate any advice on what part to use/not to use and if these full kits are available in UK please?

"Quick Struts" (possibly a brand's name) is what they're called in No. America.
There's a legion of nay sayers who disregard them as being always cheaply constructed. I have no experience with them at all as I have a spring compressor but the speed of installation and safety they afford is always cited by those who love 'em. I'd guess that Sachs would only put their name on good ones. Don't pinch pennies. Buying locally from someone who'll back them up mightn't be a bad idea. |

Sachs makes 2 or 3 qualities of shockers. Even their Super Touring one is half as durable as a genuine one and not close in ride quality. I would skip the cheap Sachs (white sticker), go at least with the ST for adecent ride. But if keeping the car longer, the ride of a genuine shock can't be beaten, and they can be get online for a decent price. Also, use only Sachs spring seats. My take is to spend more if possible and get the sockers and wishbones in genuine, the ride will be just so involving

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I saw the Chinese ones. I want to get a decent set but having never fitted myself I thought a complete built strut would be a better way to go.
I giess I need to look at spring compressors and put together myself for the best setup then. Back to Google search, lol.

I have something like this, of course being chinese makes you feel stressed if the give up so better go with a known brand, but this kind of model works very well. I also like to put some grease on the threads (just on this spring compressor threads, not on the car bolts)

Struggling to find genuine online. Done a little research and found folk recommending these:
https://www.dcperformance.co.uk/upra...volvo/v70.html I had no intention of lowering but wonder if this may help handling without looking too low? Would this be a full kit or would I still need additional parts...getting expensive! lol Looks like I'll have to compress unless I get my local garage to install and I buy the parts. These look useful... https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/stru...C=YT-020410066

Yes, I was thinking it looked like a safer option for a 'novice mechanic' ;-) LOL
Idea was to use it and sell on afterwards maybe.

I wouldn't think anyone would want to lower their car unless they wanted to streak about like a TV character.
Lowered front struts will require lowering the back end too. In your case a simple repair (replacing front end parts due a busted spring) needs to be done-not a severe revision of your ride height. Alternating the tightening of the standard compressors is all you need do. I believe many people use an impact gun on one compressor too much and cause the spring to "twang out". Just leave it on the ground and tighten alternately. Once evenly compressed you can touch the center nut with an impact wrench. It's quite satisfying. |
