Default OBDII reader not showing codes or allowing CEL reset

I'm using a new OBDII reader on my 2000 ph2 1.6 petrol V40 but it's not identifying the fault code that's switched the CEL on.

Since my previous post about this https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=287414 I've taken some screen shots of the display of my code reader, as attached.

From what I've read, by 2000 all OBD sockets 'should' be OBDII compatible, certainly for petrol engined cars & so I'm at a loss to know why I'm getting the on-screen messages that I am.

Has anyone else been able to read engine codes via OBDII for a 1.6 petrol ph2?

I'm sure someone has but I'm at a loss to know why I can't.

There is a possibility on a 2000 that you may have one of the fabled "p1.5" cars, my late 99 p1 petrol wouldn't connect with any generic scanners either, it just came up with link error.

Yes, it could be that.

I've seen a couple of these "... but everything say's it's ok, but it doesn't work ..." kind of posts on here so it's probably what you describe.

Thx

pierremcalpine, unfortunately I'd have loved it to be a user-error problem like that.

The OBD units take their power from the car & so if you connect one without putting the key to the right pos, pos II it throws an error msg & won't show any info.

Looks like it's perhaps a ph 1.5 car; it's got the OBD socket but you can't read through it.

I guess I won't know for sure until I can try using my reader on another car that I know can show the codes & allow a reset of the engine light.
