I changed my S40 1.6D2 timing belt at 110k miles as Volvo had told me 140k then changed it down. When I took the belt out it was like new that said better safe than sorry. I used a gates belt and it had the manufacturer marks on the belt so they obviously make the belts for the original engine.

I always work on the basis if you think of changing a timing belt then change it. The costs to change is far less than repair normally.

My local independent Clan... For my own piece of mind, it's being changed. I hate belts, but saying that, many years ago had to replace a cam chain on a 264, so they aren't immune from failure.

I have a bundle of receipts with the car which match service stamps.
Apart from PDI and a "Warranty Service" at 3 years, there are no stamps or receipts for the first few years. I presume any Volvo dealer could provide info from computer service records - and probably charge me £££ for the pleasure.
I checked the receipts before purchase, but not the service book. Two "careful" lady owners allegedly - mother and daughter.

Just diving into an old thread.

I have a 59 plate V50 2.0D auto with 78,000 on the clock.

It has been very reliable and apart from an air con failure due to the classic leaf build up it has run perfectly. I guess I have used less than 1 litre of oil during regular servicing and have always used premium diesel. It is in excellent condition all round and I intend to keep it for another 18 months at least.
I do have a Warranty Direct policy on the car but I am sorely tempted to have the full cambelt/tensioner/water pump change at the next service in July.

Have there been any reports of early cambelt failures on this engine in Volvo or Ford vehicles? Ten years seems an awful long time to risk a belt failure knowing the damage it can do.

After the first three years of Volvo dealer servicing and the closure of several local dealerships plus the existence just half a mile away of a Volvo 'specialist' which is staffed in the main by ex Volvo engineers I have used this local garage for all of my Volvo's for many years. Sadly I am sure this would preclude me from any goodwill should the cambelt fail prematurely.

My timing belt is going to be changed tomorrow and I'm having the water pump done while the belts off.

is it the 1.6D or the later D2 ?

The 1.6D is 10 years or 150,000 miles

The general rule of thumb for a 1.6D is 10 years, or 150k miles, whichever comes first. Belts suffer more from stop / start town driving than motorway miles, so the way the car was used will also have an effect.
I changed my '09 / 110k C30 1.6 belt earlier this month, chances are it would've lasted a while longer but decided to get it out of the way.

The 1.6D is a Citroen/Ford engine, the Citroens at least use Dayco amongst others as standard, the Volvo original that I replaced was also a 'brand name' I forget which. There are a few reputable brands that manufacturers use such as INA, Dayco, Gates to name 3.
