Default '78 244 5 speed gearbox

Dear all,

After covering many times the distance between London and Rome and back with my 4 speed 1978 I (and my bum) want to try the hedonistic feel of a 5 speed gearbox. I think an early M47 with mechanical speedometer should fit. If any of you had anything suitable please do PM ME. Couldn't do the job myself, I have been quoted 160 quid by the local garage. How does that sound.

Best, leonardo

also you might like to try the M46 overdrive gearbox .. It is satisfying flicking the O/D in and out with a switch or lever switch rather than doing a gearchange ...

many thanks clan. yes, I'd love to get the M46 as I'm told it is even more reliable. but wouldn't it need some tweaking? and would it fit the mechanical speedo?

all you would need is the shorter propshaft and possibly the different sized flange on the rear axle . and gearbox crossmember , the holes are already in the chassis for the screws .Some minor wiring to get the cut out switch working ( so that it only works in 4th gear ) all the earlier M46 had mechanical speedo drive until the later electric speedos came out . sometimes the clutch plate may need changing if the splines are finer .

someone selling a M46 here :
