Does your has the yellow dipstick?
It’s really funny the ‘lore’ that people come out with when on forums.

I have undertaken the change several times and written several guides.

The sad thing is people listen to forums. You need to be more careful when you give advice.

The fact it’s a 185 means that it probably never had the box your referencing however I would not make that claim as I don’t actually know and only give fact based advice usually that I have experience of.

Well like XC90 stated yours is different.
I have yellow dipstick thats were we put the oil... I use the Gibbons method and the oil is JWS 3309. I bought 20L from Mannol on ebay.

I bought 20l because my oil was very dirty after those 20L is RED thats how you want it.

My 2012 xc90 was at 70,000 when I changed it and despite having never towed the oil was pretty filthy. I put 12l through and it was very good but not red.

Being a 2012 mine uses AW-1 which is very costly. I would be tempted with a lot more, i.e 20l.

Once again your model is different....
Mine..
If you go on the side of the gearbox. under the tube that goes from the grill to the air box you might see the plate with the Ref. or even removing the tube ..its very easy. you will see it.

Does your engine has a silver valve cover? (see photo) and if yes you might have to remove the air box to see the ref on the gearbox.....
Do you have Volvo vida?

About the oil i would check your user manual (im almost sure its the same)

You read this, however boring it may be at times.

All you need to know is there.

2 models of gearbox, how to tell which one is it, what oil, how to change etc and so on.

Read it, then ask more questions if you have any.
