Default hellpppppppppp with the diesel pump

My S40 diesel, manual 2007 gives me headache!!!
I've changed the diesel filter and since then I cannot start the car.
I've noticed that after a while there was some air in my pipes.
I've been told that I've run the diesel pump dry and know is broken.

Can be the diesel pump broken? If I replace the pump it will work?
I have to bleed the system first before I put the new one in?

once you get air in the system there is no way you will get it going without a hand bleed pump to prime the system . There is no pump in the tank you see .... so you will either have to get a volvo bleed pump tool about £50 or find a general purpose one somewhere . Your main diesel pump is fine :-)

yes ! it connects to the filter inlet hose and draws fuel up from the tank and pumps it into the filter , you have to undo the bleed tap on top the filter to let air out .
( the inlet hose is the one nearest the wing )

I have a pump like this fitted in my 2001 V40 T4. It is tucked away vertically with retaining clips, up and left from the battery when stood at the front.

I had a squeeze (clearly!) and it was fairly firm, then filled completely and very hard to squeeze. Is this a factory standard fuel primer or something?

I read that you have to squeeze that until it gets hard, then squeeze at least 3 more times and it should be all right.
