Question Engine lumpy when cold - EGR valve?

Hello everyone,

I wonder if anyone experienced lumpy engine when cold. I've got a D5 V70 which is lumpy and smokes when it's cold but once the engine is warm everything works perfectly. The injectors, the glow plugs and the turbo were replaced but the problem remains.

I'm suspecting either faulty EGR valve or one of the exhaust valves sticking. The engine compression is spot on.

I appreciate your advice.

Matt

hi matt.
in the cold spell that we have just had when it was down to -7 mine was starting like a bag of bolts lots of smoke and rough idle. prior to that no problems. and as of today no issues with it being slightly warmer.

Yes, the start will be louder but there shouldn't be any power loss. There is definitely an issue.

noticed that during very low temperatures recently my v70-D5 was slow turning over but fired up ok but was a lot noisier than normal untill it warmed up-did'nt notice any loss in power althouh tended to take it easy until warmed up.starts and seems normal now temperatures are up a bit so can only think that is how they are,

Got a similar problem with my V70 ('02 80k) Good as gold until the cold snap, then lumpy and (sort-of) misfiring at 1000-1100 rpm when starting off. Starts ok, and once warm runs just as well as ever. Bit warmer here today too, but not used the car, see what happens tomorrow. I've put a post on the main V70 forum, but only one reply so far.

diesels do tend to sound like a bag of spanners when cold, just imagine how bad it'd be if you had 4 cylinders instead...eurgh i hate to think lol! technically though at idle the D5's do idle on 4 cylinders alternating between no ignition on 1 and 5 or 3 and 5 (cant remember which cylinders its on now)

is it defo black smoke or just grey? mine smokes when cold if i boot it from the lights, leaves a nice cloud in the rear view until it's got to about half a bar of engine warmth :P

if it feels under powered while cold but fine when warmed up then it'll be the egr or possibly something to do with fuel lines/filter/injectors but i doubt it, look for sludge round an injector under the engine cover
