I think that was caused by people not changing the fluid and filter regularly enough. Apparently clutch particles can affect the hydraulics. It doesn't seem to happen on the best maintained boxes but Volvo do have a policy action that covers a vehicle until the end of 2019. As long as the car has a FVSH there shouldn't be any arguments if the box needs changing.

I was under the impression that the powershift gearboxes are dry clutch if fitted to under 2.0 litre engines and wet clutch for 2.0 litre and above?

The Powershift gearbox is completely different from the Geartronic.
The Powershift transmission and the D2 engine are by Ford, the Geartronic and D3/D4 are Volvo. The Geartronic has a "normal" torque converter the Powershift has a double, mechanical clutch. I bought a 2013 V40 D3/Geartronic last week having test driven a D2/Powertronic beforehand. There was no comparison - the Powertronic was awful!

The Powershift 6DCT250 has a Dry Clutch and uses 1.7L Fluid with No Filter. And uses FORD GEARBOX/TRANSMISSION OIL 75W FE 1L 1547953 x2
The Powershift 6DCT450 has a Wet Clutch and uses 7.1L of fluid and has a Filter. |

I don't think they are quite as bad as some people would say but they don't tolerate neglect at all, and they are nowhere near as reliable as the AW geartronic units.
Given that they are usually mated to the less desirable engines in the model line up (in the case of diesels anyway) I can't see why anyone would choose one over a geartronic?

The oil change process is quite complex on these , and early boxes had 3 drain plugs one for each chamber , later ones had 2 ... after changing oil on dozens of these on their mandatory oil change on the 50.000 mile service , I determined that exactly 5.5 litres is the correct level ,to make the process quick and easy ... the box is very sensitive to having the correct oil level .

Hi, newbie here.
I’m just thinking of buying a 2016-19 V40 D2. My wife wants to go with an automatic transmission but I’m concerned with many reports of issues with the powershift DCT450, apparently often caused though neglect of regular fluid/filter changing and town/aggressive driving. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated; we test drove a lovely manual version today and we have definitely decided on this model. I’m just concerned about the automatic as one of the main reasons for going with Volvo is long term reliability. Many thanks! Mike |

had ours 6years no real problems as such. just random bumping when slowing to a stop. it can be months between bumps iv never been able to narrow down why it dose it. its so random . i have done frequent oil changes to try and keep it from getting any worse. i would not let it put you off a car . just make sure you have a good test drive to find any potential faults . try to factor in a warranty if you have any reservations.
