XC70 07 Halogen Headlamp Continental Adjustment
I have seen various discussions around headlamp conversion for an XC70 07 model with halogen lights but my research has resulted in my following understanding of the situation and I would appreciate any advice from people with the same vehicle who have resolved this issue.
1 – Stick on convertors can damage the plastic lens due to overheating. This includes masking the light beam angle area on the lamp front or using beam benders 2 – there is no adjustment lever as on xenons 3 – Having contacted Volvo and a headlamp protector supplier it is no longer possible to purchase clip on headlamp protectors that can then be masked accordingly 4 – the handbook shows masking templates but there is not the dot indent on the lamp cover referred to in the handbook for positioning the templates correctly and due to (1) above this method appears to not apply to the vehicles with plastic lamp fronts Therefore, other than dipping the headlamps, has anyone solved this problem ? Many thanks Steve |

This was discussed some while back and I think the conclusion was that the xenon lights didn't need to be masked because the way the light beam is thrown it does not have the same problem as traditional bulb light patterns. I speak with a lot of travellers going to and from the continent and there never seems to be a great problem with enforcement by the authorities regarding lights so I wouldn't get too concerned. Enjoy!

Many thanks for your reply.
However, I do not have the luxury of xenons they are standard halogens. I have also observed a number of comments on this forum stating that the police can pick drivers up at the ports who do not have masking hence my concerns :-( I did mask them last year with some dark blue stick plastic and they did not melt but maybe I was lucky. Have also considered getting some protectors for an earlieryear xc70 and seeing if I can get then to fit with some adjustment to my vehicle. Not sure though if having a protector over the plastic headlamp front would then cause the headlamp cover to overheat? Has anyone ever tried this? Cheers |

Just in case this helps, I consolidated all the various threads regarding headlamp conversion and purchased some headlamp protectors for the earlier XC70 (pre 05) and they fitted perfectly. I then applied the masking as in the xc70 owners manual somewhat by trial and error against a wall to see where the cutoff worked best. Just been to France, Germany and Austria and all worked perfectly. Nice and easy to remove protectors now home and use again next year. No melted headlamp fronts, no problems with police for not having visble conversion :-) I did try beam benders prior to this and can confirm that the masked headlamp protector maintains full light output and cuts the beam much more precisely.
The headlamp protectors are available from www.partsforvolvosonline.com. 1 x V70, XC70 00' to 04', EGR Headlamp protectors (PFV901956). Many thanks to the other threads for pointing me to this as a possible option. I am just confirming that it worked perfectly on my 07 model. |
