The missus just got a new Merc GLA which has push button start (tried to get her looking at V40 CC's but that's another story). The dealer told us always hit the lock button twice because that will enable the deadlocks. Sad individual that I am I read the manual ... turns out in the UK that the deadlocks are always enabled. But hitting the lock button twice turns off the key scanning for the car all the time. It's in there in black and white though interestingly it's underneath a section about saving the battery power on the remote. Out of curiosity we've tried starting the car with the key outside and it won't do it, says it can't detect the key. Not able to test boosting the signal to see if that would fool it.

This is a 2018.5 model year car so not sure if they've changed the security recently but (a) the dealers don't know how their cars security works and (b) there's a really easy way to disable the scanning when you lock the car.

Are other car systems similar?

I don't want a steering wheel lock as they may damage the leather on the steering wheel. Looks preferable to having no car though.
A typical worthless rag article that doesn't answer the important question of whether the cars listed can actually be started without the key being present. Obviously if you can boost the signal from the fob to the car the doors will open, but that isn't the big issue.
